Resident Evil 2 Remake is packed with documents, hidden toys, inventory upgrades and undeveloped photographs. Some reveal more of Raccoon City’s story, some unlock Records and bonus rewards, and others make the current playthrough considerably easier.
This page is a complete Resident Evil 2 Remake collectibles hub. It explains how many collectibles there are, how progress carries between playthroughs and the most efficient order for finding everything. For exact locations, maps and step-by-step directions, follow the dedicated guide linked in each section.
The four main collectible groups covered in this guide are:
There is no single official grand total for every optional item in the game. Some checklists also include maps, safes, locks, Portable Safes, weapons, Custom Parts and Key Items, but these categories follow different rules and should not be added together as though they were one collectible set. They are covered separately below.
Files and destroyed Mr. Raccoons are tracked across the entire game profile. Once one has registered, you do not have to collect or destroy it again in a later run. You can check your overall progress in the Records menu.
Hip Pouches work differently: their inventory upgrades apply only to the current campaign and must be collected again in every new playthrough. Film Rolls are also Key Items found within an individual run, although completing their associated Record is profile-wide.
Leon and Claire have exclusive collectibles, while several items appear only in a 2nd Run. Difficulty also matters: Assisted and Standard contain all six Hip Pouches, but Hardcore contains only three. If you are planning a comprehensive cleanup, Assisted or Standard is therefore the most convenient choice.
Files include letters, reports, diaries, memos and other documents found throughout the Police Station, Underground Facility, Sewers and NEST Laboratory. Reading all 58 Files unlocks the Lore Explorer Trophy/Achievement and the Weapons and Items concept art.
The full set cannot be completed in only two campaigns. Some Files are exclusive to Leon or Claire, and both versions of the 2nd Run contain their own exclusive documents. In practice, the shortest route requires two complete campaigns and part of a third: finish a 1st Run, complete the other character’s 2nd Run, then play the first character’s 2nd Run as far as the Sewers. You do not have to finish that third campaign once its final exclusive File has registered.
Developed photographs are stored in the Files section of the inventory, but they do not count toward the total of 58 or Lore Explorer. Use our complete checklist of all 58 File locations to track the documents required in each route.
There are 15 Mr. Raccoon toys hidden around the game. They are not picked up: shoot or strike each toy until it breaks. Eight are shared, three are tied to Leon’s story, three are tied to Claire’s story and one appears only in a 2nd Run.
Unlike the Files, all Mr. Raccoons can be cleared in two complementary campaigns, such as Leon’s 1st Run followed by Claire’s 2nd Run. Destroyed toys remain destroyed in later playthroughs, so there is no need to waste ammunition checking one you have already broken.
Destroying all 15 completes Complete Vermin Extermination and unlocks the Infinite Combat Knife, which is then available from the Item Box. Consult our guide to all 15 Mr. Raccoon locations for the character-exclusive and 2nd Run-only toys.
Every Hip Pouch immediately adds two inventory slots. Leon and Claire begin with eight slots, so finding all six on Assisted or Standard expands the inventory to its maximum of 20. All six can be collected by either character in a single run.
In a 2nd Run, the Hip Pouch normally found in the West Storage Room is moved to the Main Hall. Hardcore removes three pouches entirely, leaving a maximum of 14 slots. This means the A Waist of Space requirement cannot be completed on Hardcore.
Hip Pouches are not permanent profile unlocks; every new campaign starts with the base inventory again. Follow our guide to all Hip Pouch locations to maximize your carrying capacity as early as possible.
The game contains five Film Rolls: Film: "Commemorative", Film: "3F Locker", Film: "Hiding Place", Film: "Rising Rookie" and Film: "Lion Statue". Take them to the Darkroom on the first floor of the Police Station to develop them.
Film: "Lion Statue" appears only in a 2nd Run, so a 1st Run cannot provide the complete set. Film: "Rising Rookie" is also deliberately hidden: after developing Film: "Hiding Place" and collecting the Wooden Box from the photographed desk in the S.T.A.R.S. Office, interact with the same spot again to uncover it.
Developing all five completes the Dark Times, Dark Room Record and unlocks the Alligator concept art. The two photographs produced by Film: "Hiding Place" are also used for Treasure Hunter. See our guide to all Film Roll locations and photo rewards.
The Master of Unlocking requirement covers three dial safes and five letter locks. Leon’s desk contains two separate locks, and both count. The two Portable Safes are separate randomized puzzles and are not required for Master of Unlocking, although their Spare Parts open additional lockers in the Safety Deposit Room.
Use our lists of safe combinations and contents, all letter-lock and locker codes, and the method for opening a Portable Safe.
Leon and Claire use different arsenals and have separate sets of upgrades. Leon can collect eight Custom Parts, while Claire can collect seven. Obtaining every part in Leon’s story completes Packed Pockets; doing the same in Claire’s story completes Packed Backpack.
Some weapons are optional pickups, others are exclusive to one character or a 2nd Run, and bonus weapons have their own unlock conditions. Because of those distinctions, they should not be folded into one misleading collectibles total. See how to obtain every weapon and where to find every weapon Custom Part.
There are six area maps: three for the Police Station, one for the Sewers and two for NEST. Maps make exploration easier, but collecting all six does not unlock a Record or Trophy/Achievement. Keys and other Key Items are progression tools rather than a persistent collectible set, and many are exclusive to a character or area.
If you are aiming for a complete run, use our guides to every key and its doors and all puzzle solutions for the 1st and 2nd Run.
The following route minimizes repeat play while covering both characters and every 2nd Run-exclusive collectible:
If you would rather experience every story variation, complete all four combinations—Leon 1st Run, Claire 1st Run, Leon 2nd Run and Claire 2nd Run—and use the dedicated File checklist to mark only the documents you still need.
For every optional challenge, unlock condition and bonus, consult our complete list of Records and rewards and the Trophy and Achievement guide.
With those rules in mind, you can divide the cleanup between complementary campaigns instead of searching for everything from scratch each time. Start with the category guides above, keep the route-exclusive Files for the correct 2nd Run and complete your final sweep before boarding the cable car.
