Who Is Mr. X and Where Does He Come From?

The Tyrant, also known as Mr. X, is a creature created by taking the effects of the T-virus to their absolute limit. The enemy before you is the T-00, part of the mass-produced T-103 line of Tyrants. Much like Nemesis, he is a "super zombie" that relentlessly pursues his target until they are dead. In Mr. X’s case, however, he takes the form of an indestructible giant wearing a trench coat who walks very slowly and must be escaped rather than fought.

At a certain point in the game, depending on whether you are playing Scenario A or Scenario B, he will appear and pursue you everywhere. You should therefore learn exactly how to avoid him and understand how he behaves.

Can You Kill the Tyrant Mr. X?

If you are wondering whether Mr. X can be killed conventionally, the answer is a resounding no. Mr. X can only be defeated as part of the story, during either a 1st Run or 2nd Run, once Leon obtains the Anti-Tank Rocket. When playing as Claire, he will simply stop appearing after you reach a certain point in the story.

When Does Mr. X Appear and How Can You Stop Him Chasing You?

The Tyrant first appears at different points during your exploration of the Police Station, depending on whether you are playing a 1st Run or 2nd Run. He will then make several mandatory appearances. In addition, if he sees you or hears a gunshot or other loud noise, he will pursue you through multiple rooms.

  • Listen carefully for his footsteps and the sound he makes when opening doors. Both are easy to recognize, allowing you to hide until the danger has passed.
  • If he does not see you, he will not pursue you. For example, if you are in the Library and can hear him but he does not have a direct line of sight because bookshelves are blocking his view, he will not chase you.
  • He cannot "teleport". For example, if you lose him in the Police Station’s west hallway and climb through the window into the Operations Room before running toward the Darkroom, he must follow the entire route to reach you. He will not suddenly appear at the top of the stairs.
  • If you hear the music change, he has spotted you.
  • Once he sees you, he will walk faster, although he never actually runs.
  • He will almost always begin by punching with his right fist, so try to dodge him by moving around his left side.
  • You cannot kill him. You can temporarily stun him by shooting him in the head, as his coat is bulletproof.
  • He is not hostile toward other enemies, and they will not attack him. Do not try to lure him into a hallway containing Lickers, for example. It will achieve nothing.
  • He cannot enter safe rooms. If a room contains both an Item Box and a typewriter, the Tyrant will not enter it. However, if he knows you are nearby, he may patrol outside for a while.

Locations Where Mr. X Always Appears

As mentioned above, in addition to pursuing you throughout the Police Station, Mr. X makes several mandatory appearances depending on whether you are playing a 1st Run or 2nd Run and which character you selected.

1st Run

  • With either character, Mr. X first appears after you extinguish the burning helicopter and attempt to cross the hallway.
  • With Claire, you will encounter him again after using the key card to leave the Parking Garage. He will pursue you until you leave the main street. He disappears from the game once you enter the Sewers.
  • With Leon, you will encounter him as you leave the Jail after obtaining the Parking Garage Key Card. He appears in the hallway that is not filled with zombies.
  • With Leon, he will not appear again until you reach the Laboratory. He appears after you collect the Electronic Chip and once more near the end of the game, after you climb down the ladder beside the giant plant while the countdown is underway.

2nd Run

There is a trick involving Mr. X’s first appearance that allows you to avoid him for almost your entire initial exploration of the Police Station.

Thanks to the differences in the 2nd Run, you have much more freedom to explore from the beginning. Whatever you do, do not go to the end of the west hallway on the second floor, beyond the S.T.A.R.S. Office door. This is the trigger that causes Mr. X to appear. You can therefore collect the Lion and Unicorn Medallions, place them in the Goddess Statue, and then retrieve the Detonator and Battery.

Mr. X will appear when you attempt to collect the Maiden Medallion, so move the bookcase blocking the door to the Library beforehand. This will allow you to escape through that door immediately after obtaining the medallion, meaning you can avoid him completely during your first sweep of the building. Since you can explore almost every room before placing the medallions—with the exception of the rooms containing the Power Panel Parts—he should not pose much of a threat while you search for them.

Bear in mind that he will also appear at the same mandatory points as in the 1st Run.
