Among the many materials you can obtain in Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the Whetstone. In this section, we'll explain how to obtain this material so you can use it for different types of enhancements. Remember that the material chest locations listed here correspond to your first visit to each area and are also covered in our story walkthrough. As you progress through the game, new chests containing this material may appear in different locations.
Yes. Whetstones are one of the materials you can purchase from Yorimasa.
Whetstones are also rewarded for completing certain missions. You can obtain them by completing the following:
You'll find a Whetstone on the path leading northwest, toward the west-southwestern part of the center of the map.
It's in an area with four Genma archers. Once you've defeated them, look for the chest in the northern section, on the elevated platform where two of them were positioned.
You'll find another one in the northeastern corner of the central area of the map. You'll need to progress far enough to defeat the boss in this area before you can reach it.
Look in the corner to find a chest near a small altar.
Once you've unlocked the ability to destroy Malice Barriers, break the one near Nio-mon Gate.
Once it's gone, cross through and head east, passing a gate. You'll find the chest containing the Whetstone at the top of a small slope.
There are two Whetstones inside a chest located in the courtyard of a house in the northwestern corner of the explorable area, inside a compound controlled by enemies.
When you begin Careful What You Wish For, several new areas will open up in Eastern Kyoto. One is an enclosed courtyard west of the locked gate southwest of Rokudo-chinnoji Temple.
Aside from a couple of those strange head-like Genma that spit projectiles, you'll find a small courtyard containing a chest with a Whetstone. You can find another Hempen Cloth in the house containing the Stout Pillar in the southwestern area, in the northern courtyard of the building.
There's another chest inside a house east-northeast of Rokudo-chinnoji Temple, near the edge of the Malice.
Once you've unlocked the ability to destroy Malice Barriers, a chest will appear in one of the courtyards that previously contained a Stout Pillar, northeast of Rokudo-chinnoji Temple. It contains two Whetstones.
Once you have access to the southeastern area of Eastern Kyoto, after collecting the previous chest, and climb onto the rooftops, head to the northwestern corner of the area to find another chest containing one Whetstone.
There's another Whetstone chest west of the Yasaka Pagoda Spirit Mirror.
You can find another one inside a chest on a cart in the southwestern corner of the southeastern fields.
You'll find another Whetstone in the alley where you complete Pale Lights in a Night Sky.
The chest is at the beginning of the alley, where the bamboo starts.
Once you visit the old temple during Patching up the Pouch, continue until you reach the courtyard containing a large number of enemies. Once they're defeated, pass through the gate and turn right to find another chest in the corner containing a Whetstone and Hempen Cloth.
When you reach Windswept Kennin-ji, the gate to one of the compounds in the southeastern fields will open.
Defeat the enemies, destroy the Malice Barrier on the northern side of the compound and you'll find the chest beside the northern fence on the other side.
Once you can reach the island northwest of the Kamo River, after the Malice recedes, you can wall run across from the eastern shore to the southeastern part of the island. Look for a chest inside a house along the western edge to find another Whetstone.
If you head south from the Kamo River - East Spirit Mirror, southeast of the island where you found the previous chest, you'll find another Whetstone inside a chest in a field on the western side of the street.
East of Gojo Street - West, the Spirit Mirror at the intersection in southwestern Kyoto, you'll find a temple containing a chest with another Whetstone.
In the southernmost area of the southwestern fields in Kyoto, there's a small hut that an enemy will burst out of. Inside is a chest containing two Whetstones.
You'll find another two Whetstones inside a chest northwest of the previous one, in a courtyard packed with enemies.
You'll find a chest in the northeastern corner of the garden south of Nijo-jo Castle, near the starting area.
You'll find two inside a chest on the Second Layer. You'll reach it by heading south via the ladders leading toward the northwestern section of this layer.
