
Among the different side missions you can complete in Onimusha: Way of the Sword are Chance Encounters. These are traditional side missions in which you'll help the people of Kyoto deal with threats, find their loved ones and solve all kinds of problems.
This side mission becomes available starting from A Strength in Refuge. The marker is east-southeast of Rokudo-chinnoji Temple, in the southeastern part of the currently available map.
The farmer will mark a location in the west-northwestern part of the available map. The marker leads to a previously inaccessible compound where you'll need to defeat all the enemies.
Once they're defeated, there are two material chests in the courtyard, one on the eastern side and another behind the building. They contain Iron and two pieces of Hempen Cloth, respectively. Once the courtyard is clear, return to the farmer to complete the mission.
This side mission becomes available starting from A Strength in Refuge. The marker is east-southeast of Rokudo-chinnoji Temple, in the southeastern part of the currently available map.
When you arrive, speak to the woman. A marker will appear in a courtyard to the north, near the Yasaka Pagoda Spirit Mirror. Be careful: don't climb the stairs beside the Spirit Mirror. Instead, go around the building from the north to reach the objective area. You need to defeat a group of Kubi Akari, the floating head-like Genma that spit projectiles and explode. There are also two material chests in this area. One contains a Whetstone, right at the entrance to the bamboo area, while the other, found after climbing the steps near the last enemies, contains Cotton Cloth.
Once the area is clear, return to the woman to collect your reward.
This mission becomes available starting from Shadows Fall. The marker is in the southwestern area, near the Gojo Street - West Spirit Mirror.
Speak to the man beside the southern building to find out what he wants. He'll send you to the compound in the southern fields, which you passed through during the previous main mission if you've been following our walkthrough. Follow the marker and a Rift will appear. Defeat two waves of Genma and then the Byakue that emerges during the third. Seal the Rift afterwards to complete the mission.
This mission becomes available starting from Shadows Fall. The marker is in the southwestern area, near the Gojo Street - West Spirit Mirror.
Speak to the samurai and he'll explain his problem. You need to head to Nijo-jo Castle, where the locations of several Kubi Akari will be marked. Starting from the garden and heading northwest:
Once all five Kubi Akari have been eliminated, return to complete the mission.
This mission becomes available starting from Shadows Fall. You'll see its icon in the area east of Rokudo-chinnoji Temple, near the Kiyomizu-zaka Slope Spirit Mirror.
This mission is similar to the previous one. Starting from Nio-mon Gate, let's hunt down the Kubi Akari:
Once all five are eliminated, return to complete the mission.
This mission becomes available starting from To Live is to Suffer. You'll find the marker in southwestern Kyoto, west of Gojo Street - West.
Find the woman in the small courtyard and you'll receive Old Drawing No. 1. You'll be given a search area in Kiyomizu-zaka, in the east-southeastern part of the map. To make things easy, you're looking for the rooftop directly southeast of the Kiyomizu-zaka Slope Spirit Mirror. You can reach it using the ladder south of the Spirit Mirror and then climbing the next one.
Once you're there, the Oni Gauntlet will begin to glow. Activate the Oni Glyph to reveal Treasure #46 and complete the mission.
This mission becomes available starting from To Live is to Suffer. You'll find the marker in southwestern Kyoto, west of Gojo Street - West.
Once again, the objective is to eliminate partially hidden Kubi Akari. Starting at the Palace Entrance, we'll head north, east-southeast and then north:
This mission becomes available starting from To Live is to Suffer. You'll find the marker in the east-southeastern part of Kyoto, in Kiyomizu-zaka.
Approach and the man will mention a growling spirit. The marker takes you to the area southwest of Toribeno, southeast of the southernmost fields. Start defeating the Genma and eventually a Nue will appear. At this stage of the game, it shouldn't pose much of a threat. Once it's defeated, you can return to complete the mission.
This mission becomes available starting from Okuni's Kabuki Dance. The marker appears north of the intersection west of Gojo Street - West.
You'll be sent to Yasaka Pagoda to eliminate some Genma. To enter, look for the ladder on the southern side of the compound, as the main gate will be locked from the inside. Defeat the enemies in the lower area and then those above before returning to complete the mission.
This mission becomes available starting from Okuni's Kabuki Dance, provided you've completed Hidden Treasure No. 1. The marker appears in the Kiyomizu-zaka area, in the eastern part of the map.
This time, the drawing clearly shows a ladder, making the destination much easier to identify. Head to the search area and find the waterfall west of the ladder west-northwest of Yasaka Pagoda. You'll find the Glyph and Treasure there. It contains Fine Silk Cloth and an Oni Stone.
This mission becomes available starting from The Demon on the Mount. The marker appears in northwestern Kyoto, west of Shijo Street.
You'll be sent to one of the beaches in the southwest. Defeat the Genma and return to complete the mission. It's a very quick job.
This mission becomes available starting from The Demon on the Mount, provided you've completed Hidden Treasure No. 1 and Hidden Treasure No. 2. The marker appears in northwestern Kyoto, west of Shijo Street.
This time, the clue points to Kennin-ji. It's easier to find than the previous Treasures: simply look for the Glyph in front of the southeastern gate of the compound.
It contains Fine Silk Cloth and Power Stone x2.
This mission becomes available starting from A Haunted Distraction. The marker appears in the northernmost part of Kyoto, west of the Shijo Street Spirit Mirror.
This time, the five targets are split across two areas. Start from the Mountain Trail Spirit Mirror and head north:
The remaining targets are in the Futasegawa Mountain Stream area.
This mission becomes available starting from A Haunted Distraction. The marker appears in the northernmost part of Kyoto, west of the Shijo Street Spirit Mirror.
You'll be sent southeast of the sandbar, in northwestern Kyoto. Defeat a group of Hirehime by the riverbank and return to complete the mission.

The marker takes you east of Toribeno, in the southeastern corner of Kyoto. Head to the northwestern corner of the temple in the elevated area to the north to find the Glyph that reveals the Treasure.
It contains Fine Silk Cloth, Power Stone x2 and Tamahagane.
This mission becomes available starting from The Clash at Rendaino, provided you've completed all the previous Hidden Treasure missions. The marker appears in northeastern Kyoto, west of Shijo Street.
This is the easiest Hidden Treasure mission. Head to Yasaka Pagoda inside the search area. From the Spirit Mirror, climb the steps and enter the pagoda on your right. Keep climbing until you can step out onto the roof, where you'll find the Oni Glyph that reveals the Treasure. It contains Fine Silk Cloth, Oni Stone x2 and a Skeleton Hozuki.
This mission becomes available starting from The Clash at Rendaino. The marker appears in northeastern Kyoto, west of Shijo Street.
All five targets are in the Bamboo Path. Starting from the Bamboo Path Spirit Mirror, head west and then north:

You'll be sent to the previously locked fort in the southwestern corner of Kyoto, which will finally be open. Enter through the southern gate and defeat the Genma until you can seal the Rift.
