With Onimusha: Way of the Sword being the latest main entry in a long-running series, it's understandable that newcomers who weren't around for the original games may wonder whether they need to know the previous Onimusha titles. The four main entries, along with Blade Warriors, revolved around the war between the Oni's chosen warriors and Fortinbras and his minions. It's a fairly dense saga with plenty of major characters and villains, so... do you really need to know all of that before playing the new game?
The short answer is no. While we won't confirm or deny whether characters from previous games make an appearance — you'll have to play the game to find out for yourself — we can confirm that the story is completely standalone from the earlier entries. The Genma are still the enemy, but you'll fully understand the threat they pose to Kyoto without needing any prior knowledge of the previous games.
