The story of Onimusha: Way of the Sword reaches the end of its main plot after completing The Way of the Sword. Although the game lets you continue exploring from The Clash at Rendaino so you can complete the game 100%, another option is to start New Game+ using your completed save data. As in many other games, doing so comes with a number of advantages and limitations, which we'll explain below.

New Game+ in Onimusha: Way of the Sword and how it works

If you decide to start New Game+ in Onimusha: Way of the Sword — an option that becomes available after completing the game — there are several things you need to know about what carries over, what resets and the content you can unlock depending on the difficulty you choose.

  • You can start the game in Carnage Mode. This lets you tackle the game's highest difficulty, where several special cosmetic rewards can be unlocked, while still carrying over some advantages from your completed playthrough.
  • You do not keep your equipment enhancements. You'll have to gather the necessary materials again to enhance your Clothing, Sword and Gauntlet.
  • You do not keep the materials used for equipment enhancements or any Red Souls you had accumulated. However, other items, offerings and some materials do carry over.
  • Your progress in side missions and other story-related activities resets. Mysteries of Kyoto and Chance Encounters can be completed again, and Spirit Mirrors must also be unlocked again. However, your collected Genma Notes and rescued Lion Dogs do carry over.
  • You keep all the abilities you unlocked during your first playthrough. This includes awakened Oni abilities and Oni Armaments, which become available during the early stages of your second playthrough, before completing The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu.
  • You keep the Charms obtained during your first playthrough, including their enhancements. The related management features become available again as you progress through the story.
  • You keep your Sword Appearances, Outfits, Haori Coats and Hozuki Pouches from your first playthrough. Hozuki Pouch enhancements also carry over.
