The Game Awards 2020 ha presentado hoy a los nominados a sus más de 20 categorías entre las que se incluye la de mejor juego del año, mejor dirección, mejor narrativa y mejor juego en varios géneros concretos. El título con más nominaciones es The Last of Us Parte 2, que no sólo aparece como pretendiente a Juego del Año, sino que también está nominado a nueve galardones más.
En la categoría de Juego del Año hay cinco títulos nominados más aparte de la obra de Naughty Dog: Animal Crossing: New Horizons, DOOM Eternal, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Ghost of Tsushima y Hades. Estos son los videojuegos que optan al premio de mejor título del año, aunque sorprende la ausencia de Half-Life: Alyx, que está nominado en cuatro categorías pero no opta al galardón más importante.

También cabe destacar que se han nominado juegos que no se han publicado este año, como Among Us, que se lanzó originalmente en 2018, o Hades, que ha estrenado en 2020 su versión 1.0 después de un tiempo en acceso anticipado y ahora está nominado a Juego del Año. El propio Geoff Keighley ya adelantó que no tenía ningún tipo de problema con eso, ya que un juego no necesita haber salido este año para poder optar a los premios de The Game Awards 2020.
