Resident Evil 3 Remake, officially titled Resident Evil 3, is Capcom’s modern reimagining of the 1999 survival horror classic Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Released after the enormous success of Resident Evil 2 Remake, this new version brought Jill Valentine’s desperate escape from Raccoon City to a new generation of players. It was darker, faster, more cinematic, and more action-oriented than its predecessor, while still preserving the fear of being hunted by one of the most iconic monsters in the franchise: Nemesis.

The Origin of the Remake

The original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was released in 1999 and became famous for its urban setting, its sense of constant pursuit, and its terrifying main enemy. Unlike the first two Resident Evil games, which focused heavily on enclosed locations such as mansions and police stations, Resident Evil 3 placed players in the streets of Raccoon City during the final hours of the viral outbreak.

Capcom’s remake was created with a clear goal: to modernize that escape story using the technology, visual quality, and design philosophy that had worked so well in Resident Evil 2 Remake. However, Resident Evil 3 Remake was not intended to be a simple copy of the original. It rearranged events, redesigned locations, expanded character interactions, and gave the game a stronger cinematic rhythm.

Jill Valentine and the Fight to Escape Raccoon City

At the center of the game is Jill Valentine, one of the most important heroines in the Resident Evil saga. A former member of S.T.A.R.S., Jill already knows about Umbrella’s experiments and the horrors hidden behind the company’s public image. When the outbreak consumes Raccoon City, she becomes one of the last people capable of exposing the truth.

Her escape is complicated by the arrival of Nemesis, a bio-organic weapon created to eliminate surviving S.T.A.R.S. members. Nemesis is not just another monster. He is intelligent, aggressive, heavily armed, and capable of pursuing Jill across different parts of the city. His presence gives the game its identity: the player is not only surviving zombies, but also running from a creature designed specifically to hunt them.

  • Jill Valentine represents resistance, intelligence, and survival under pressure.
  • Carlos Oliveira provides a second playable perspective and adds emotional weight to the story.
  • Nemesis creates urgency through pursuit, scripted encounters, and boss battles.
  • Raccoon City becomes a collapsing urban nightmare full of fire, panic, infection, and destruction.

Creation and Design

Resident Evil 3 Remake was built with Capcom’s RE Engine, the same technology that powered Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 2 Remake. This allowed the developers to create detailed characters, realistic lighting, intense gore, and oppressive environments. The streets of Raccoon City, the hospital, the sewers, the subway, and the laboratory areas all received a much more modern visual treatment.

The gameplay also moved in a faster direction. Compared with Resident Evil 2 Remake, this game places more emphasis on dodging, quick reactions, action sequences, and direct confrontation. Jill can perform an emergency dodge, which rewards timing and makes combat feel more agile. This helped distinguish the remake from Leon and Claire’s slower, more methodical nightmare in the police station.

Launch and Commercial Success

Resident Evil 3 Remake launched on April 3, 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The release arrived at a moment when the Resident Evil franchise was enjoying a major creative revival. Resident Evil 7 had restored the horror identity of the series, and Resident Evil 2 Remake had shown that Capcom could successfully rebuild a classic for modern audiences.

The game was a strong commercial success. It exceeded 2 million units shipped worldwide within five days of release, showing that fans were eager to return to Raccoon City. Over time, continued digital sales, discounts, new platforms, and the strength of the Resident Evil brand helped the remake become one of Capcom’s major long-term sellers.

  1. 1999: the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is released and introduces Nemesis as a legendary stalker enemy.
  2. 2019: Resident Evil 2 Remake becomes a major success and increases expectations for more remakes.
  3. 2020: Resident Evil 3 Remake launches worldwide with Resident Evil Resistance included.
  4. 2022: upgraded versions bring the game to newer consoles with improved performance and visual features.
  5. 2020s: the game continues selling strongly and remains an important part of Capcom’s remake strategy.

Resident Evil Resistance

One notable part of the release was Resident Evil Resistance, an asymmetrical online multiplayer mode included with Resident Evil 3. In this mode, a team of survivors had to escape deadly experiments while another player controlled the Mastermind, placing traps, enemies, cameras, and bioweapons.

Although Resistance did not become as iconic as the main campaign, it showed Capcom’s interest in experimenting with multiplayer formats inside the Resident Evil universe. It also gave the package a broader identity, combining a cinematic single-player remake with a separate online survival experience.

Reception and Legacy

Resident Evil 3 Remake was praised for its visuals, performances, atmosphere, character design, and fast pacing. Jill Valentine’s modern version was especially well received, and Carlos gained more personality and importance than in the original game. The remake also delivered memorable action sequences and several intense confrontations with Nemesis.

At the same time, it became one of the more debated modern Resident Evil entries. Some fans appreciated its speed and cinematic structure, while others missed locations, puzzles, branching moments, and content from the 1999 version. This made the game successful but also more controversial than Resident Evil 2 Remake.

Even with that debate, its legacy is important. Resident Evil 3 Remake helped continue Capcom’s revival of the franchise, kept Raccoon City central to modern Resident Evil, and proved that Jill Valentine remained one of gaming’s strongest horror protagonists. It may be shorter and more direct than other entries, but it delivers a focused story of survival, pursuit, and escape from a city doomed by Umbrella’s experiments.
