How to defeat Headmistress Hecate

Headmistress Hecate is a fairly dangerous first boss because she has a wide range of ranged attacks, can create copies of herself, summon minor enemies and protect herself from your attacks with temporary shields, among other things. The battle can feel overwhelming the first time, but you will soon discover that she follows several fairly predictable patterns.

Below, we take you through her main attacks:

• Hecate can spin around and create a ring of dark magic around herself that expands and contracts. Move away to avoid it or dash through it before it hits you.
• Hecate can create up to three copies of herself, but only one is the real enemy, so there is no point attacking the decoys. Try to identify the real Hecate if you can.
• While her copies are active, Hecate can fire green flames or volleys of fire, so dodge them as best you can.
• Hecate will sometimes try to attack you at close range with crescents of green fire. This move is easy to anticipate when you see her charging her torches.

• After losing enough health, Hecate will protect herself with a shield and summon several witches. Try to kill these enemies as quickly as possible to make the boss drop her shield. She will be invulnerable in the meantime.
• When she takes cover behind her shield, keep an eye on her ranged attacks. She can summon numerous bouncing fireballs or create circles on the ground that eventually explode. Keep moving.
• The second time she protects herself with her shield, watch out for an orb that she launches at you at high speed. This is a curse that will transform you into a defenseless sheep for several seconds if it hits you.

The key to defeating Hecate is, of course, to look for safe opportunities to attack her. This boss has plenty of moments when she is vulnerable between attacks, but she never gives you much time to deal damage, so do not get greedy. You will often only be able to hit her two or three times before she retaliates, so remember to move quickly and constantly strike and retreat.

One of the best opportunities to hit her comes when she performs her ring attack, which expands and contracts across the ground. She is at your mercy while doing this. You can attack her from a distance with your Specials, staying beyond the ring's reach, or step inside the ring and strike her in melee. If you choose the latter, you will need to carefully time when to dash back out to avoid taking damage from the magic.

You will also have a good opportunity to deal plenty of damage whenever she tries to attack you at close range, although you will need to dash behind her quickly to avoid her flames and slashes.

Do not forget about the numerous trees around the arena, either. You can destroy them at the right moment to deal environmental damage to both Hecate and her witch minions. Overall, this is not a particularly difficult battle once you get the hang of it and learn to anticipate each of the Headmistress's moves.

Reward for defeating Headmistress Hecate
