Among the activities involving the ship in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, the ultimate challenge comes in the form of Legendary Ships. There are five ships spread across four locations on the world map, all boasting greater attack power, defenses and tactical capabilities than any other vessel you'll face. They also have unique abilities and characteristics, meaning each one requires a different strategy. Here's everything you need to know about them.

Before you begin, there are a few things you should know about Legendary Ships.

  • They cannot be boarded: Legendary Ships cannot be boarded or added to your fleet.
  • You can't use the exploit from the original game: there's no way to swim over to a Legendary Ship, climb aboard and eliminate its crew as you could in the original Black Flag.
  • They are fought in enclosed areas: when you move within firing range of a Legendary Ship, a cutscene will play and you'll enter a separate enclosed area outside the world map. The only way out is to sink it or be sunk.
  • You'll earn exclusive rewards for destroying a Legendary Ship: you'll receive the Legendary Ship's hull, sails, wheel and figurehead, as well as money.
  • Legendary Ships respawn: if you leave the area, they'll eventually reappear and you can sink them again.

El Impoluto

You'll find this ship in the northwestern corner of Dry Tortuga, the northwesternmost region on the world map (115,842).

El Impoluto is an extremely fast Legendary Ship. It can leave you in its wake without any trouble, reposition itself and unleash broadsides that continue for several seconds, so try to stop dead or get behind it whenever you see it lining up a shot. It also has a nasty habit of ramming you, so try to stay behind it and fire chain shot at its sails to reduce its mobility as quickly as possible. The main problem is that it will keep circling around to line you up, ram you and unleash a devastating broadside, or remain at long range and fire broadsides that will ALWAYS reach your position. Its speed arguably makes it the most difficult Legendary Ship.

One way to take advantage of its movements is to use the fire barrels you can drop from the stern of your ship. Wait for it to finish turning, brace just before its broadside hits, then turn your stern toward it and drop as many barrels as you can between El Impoluto and your ship. With a little practice, you can make five or six barrels explode against it, dealing a huge amount of damage. Once you've reduced its health to one-third, it should lose its broadside cannons, but don't assume it will become any less dangerous just because it is limited to ramming attacks and its forward cannons.

  • Rewards: El Impoluto Wheel, El Impoluto Sails, El Impoluto Hull, El Impoluto Figurehead and El Impoluto Model.

HMS Fearless and Royal Sovereign

This pair of warships can be found northeast of Eleuthera, in the northeastern corner of the world map.

They mirror each other's movements: whenever one moves in a particular direction, the other will do the opposite. They'll constantly try to sail past you on opposite sides and hit you with two broadsides at once. Their main weakness is that they drop fire barrels from their sterns: you can shoot the barrels to make them explode when the ships pass close to them as they turn around to line up another attack. They follow the same route throughout the fight, making their movements predictable. They also have less health than the other Legendary Ships and aren't particularly aggressive—at least until you deplete one ship's health. Once that happens, the remaining ship will deal more damage and ram you frequently. Try to reduce both ships' health evenly, even if that means facing their attacks at the same time.

  • Rewards: HMS Fearless Figurehead, HMS Fearless Wheel, HMS Fearless Sails, HMS Fearless Hull and HMS Fearless Model.

La Dama Negra

The fourth Legendary Ship can be found in the southern part of Serranilla, the region in the southwestern corner of the map (240,72).

This ship is equipped with a special mortar that unleashes a rain of fire resembling cluster bombs. The mortar is effective at any range, so there's no genuinely safe position. The good news is that La Dama Negra doesn't have much firepower or speed, except when it moves away to fire its mortar in arcing bursts from the front. As long as you brace just before each impact, the fight should be fairly straightforward.

  • Rewards: La Dama Negra Figurehead, La Dama Negra Wheel, La Dama Negra Sails, La Dama Negra Hull and La Dama Negra Model.

HMS Prince

The final Legendary Ship can be found in the southeastern corner of Navassa, at the southeasternmost point of the world map (854,55).

HMS Prince combines the speed of El Impoluto with La Dama Negra's mortar, but is less dangerous than either of them individually. You'll never be able to catch it from behind, but its broadside cannons are fairly weak. The main problem is that whenever you deplete one of its health segments, it will flee the battle area and fire its mortar for a while. You cannot catch the ship while it's retreating, so wait for its icon to reappear and keep firing until it sinks.

  • Rewards: HMS Prince Figurehead, HMS Prince Wheel, HMS Prince Sails, HMS Prince Hull and HMS Prince Model.
