You cannot complete any 42 Hobbies and Pastimes and reach 100% in GTA 5. The game requires 42 specific checklist entries. Yoga, Hunting, Arms Trafficking, Bail Bonds and edition-specific bonus activities are optional and cannot replace a missing required event.

The required total is made up of six Shooting Range categories, 12 Flight School lessons, five Street Races, six Off-Road Races, four Sea Races, three Triathlons, two Parachuting groups and four individual activities: Tennis, Golf, Darts and one private dance at the Strip Club.

Story Mode only: GTA Online has separate races, sports, challenges and progression. Nothing completed with an Online character advances this Story Mode checklist.

For the other completion categories and rewards, see our complete GTA 5 100% guide.

In this guide:

How many Hobbies and Pastimes are there in GTA 5?

The answer depends on the edition, but the requirement does not. Standard PS3 and Xbox 360 editions track 58 Hobbies and Pastimes. Their Special and Collector's Editions track 59 because they add the Stunt Plane Time Trials as one optional entry. Every version released from the PS4, Xbox One and PC generation onward tracks 61, adding the optional Stock Car Races and Wildlife Photography Challenge.

All editions use the same 42 required entries. This is why an activity can appear under Hobbies and Pastimes without increasing the 42/42 completion counter. On Rockstar's detailed checklist, required entries are identified by a colored progress bar.

A checklist entry is not always one event. The 13 Parachute Jumps are grouped into only two entries - Base Jumps and Helicopter Jumps - while every Flight School lesson and every race is counted separately. Shooting Range progress is counted by six weapon categories, even though each category contains three challenges.

You only need Bronze: Gold medals are not required for 100%. For races and Triathlons, a medal means finishing in the top three. Gold matters separately for the Multi-Disciplined achievement or trophy.

Shooting Range: six required categories and 18 challenges

The two Story Mode Shooting Ranges are inside the Ammu-Nation stores in Cypress Flats and Pillbox Hill. All three protagonists can use them. There are six required weapon categories, each containing three challenges. Earn at least Bronze in all three challenges of a category to complete that category's single checklist entry.

Required Shooting Range categories
Checklist entryExamples of usable weaponsRequirement
Hand GunsPistol, Combat Pistol, AP PistolMedal in Challenges 1, 2 and 3

ShotgunsSawed-Off Shotgun, Pump Shotgun, Assault ShotgunMedal in Challenges 1, 2 and 3
Light Machine GunsMG, Combat MGMedal in Challenges 1, 2 and 3
HeavyMinigunMedal in Challenges 1, 2 and 3

You do not have to repeat the challenges with every weapon listed in a category: weapons within that category share challenge progress. If Heavy or another category is unavailable, continue the story until the relevant weapon has unlocked and return later.

The bonus Railgun trials found in compatible editions are not a seventh required category. They do not count toward 100% and are not needed for the standard Shooting Range discounts. Completing all required challenges at Bronze, Silver or Gold level can unlock Ammu-Nation discounts of 10%, 15% or 25% respectively for the protagonist who earned those medals.

Flight School: all 12 required lessons

Story Mode Flight School is at Los Santos International Airport on Exceptionalists Way. It becomes available after Friends Reunited and can be completed by Michael or Franklin. Trevor does not need to repeat it. Flight School covers planes, helicopters and skydiving - not just aircraft takeoffs and landings.

Every lesson counts separately, so an 11/12 result leaves one full entry missing. Completing the school also raises the character's Flying skill and improves aircraft handling.

Required Street, Off-Road and Sea Races

All 15 races listed below are required. You only need a medal - normally third place or better - rather than first place. However, some races must be won to unlock the next event, so aiming for first avoids progression problems.

Five Street Races

Hao's Street Races are exclusive to Franklin and appear only between 20:00 and 05:00. The first event is the Strangers and Freaks mission Shift Work. If its marker has not appeared, complete Complications and Franklin's introductory Pulling Favors mission, then return at night. Hao sends a text when each subsequent race becomes available.

Off-Road Races become available after Mr. Philips. Any protagonist can compete. The series contains four bike or ATV events and two SUV events, with later races unlocking as the earlier ones are completed.

Four Sea Races

The four Sea Races unlock after Hood Safari. Swim to the Seashark at a race marker and use the on-screen prompt. Any protagonist can enter, and finishing in the top three is enough for the 100% checklist.

Triathlons and Parachuting

All three Triathlons

The first Triathlon unlocks after Daddy's Little Girl; completing it reveals the next. Michael, Franklin and Trevor can all compete. You do not have to win: finishing third or better earns the medal required for 100%. Triathlons improve Stamina, Strength and Lung Capacity. They do not pay prize money, but completing one awards a Triathlon Outfit to the protagonist who entered.

All 13 Parachute Jumps, counted as two entries

Parachute Jumps appear after Franklin completes Dom's Risk Assessment mission. There are five Base Jumps and eight Helicopter Jumps. You must finish all 13, but the checklist awards one entry for completing each group.

There are eight usable tennis courts, not nine. Golf must be a full nine-hole round: playing one hole, defeating an opponent with an over-par score or abandoning the round will not satisfy the checklist.

Optional Hobbies and Pastimes

The following activities may appear in the same Hobbies and Pastimes section, but none contributes to the required 42. Complete them for their own rewards, trophies or full content completion.

You can start several activities early, but the full 42/42 checklist cannot be finished until late in the story because Parachuting depends on Franklin's Dom mission chain and some weapons unlock progressively.

Stock Car Races and Wildlife Photography were originally marketed as returning-player bonuses. Their availability can still depend on the game edition, installed content and account entitlement, so do not assume that every installation will show them. If this bonus content is absent, it cannot block 100% completion.

The Story Mode Wildlife Photography Challenge is also different from GTA Online's later animal-photography objectives. Online photographs, races and medals never count toward this page's 42 entries.

How to check progress and fix a 41/42 checklist

Open the pause menu and check Stats > 100% Checklist. The category total tells you how many required entries have registered. A linked Rockstar Games account may provide a more detailed checklist; required objectives are the ones marked with the colored completion indicator.

If the counter is stuck at 41/42, check these common causes in order:

  1. Shooting Range: confirm medals in all three challenges for each of the six base categories. The bonus Railgun trials do not replace a missing category.
  2. Flight School: check all 12 lessons individually. Bronze is enough, but every lesson needs a medal.
  3. Parachuting: finish all five Base Jumps and all eight Helicopter Jumps. Completing Dom's story missions alone is not the same thing.
  4. Golf: play all nine holes and finish at even par or below. Simply beating an opponent is not sufficient if your score is over par.
  5. Tennis: set the match length to one game, then finish and win that match.
  6. Races: verify five Street, six Off-Road and four Sea Races. Mineward Spiral and all Street Races have time-of-day restrictions, so their markers may be hidden.
  7. Triathlons: complete all three in third place or better; do not confuse them with Mary-Ann's Strangers and Freaks races.
  8. Darts and Strip Club: win the darts game and let the private dance finish before leaving.
  9. Optional content: Yoga, Hunting, Arms Trafficking, Bail Bonds, Stunt Plane Time Trials, Stock Car Races and Wildlife Photography never fill a missing required entry.
Save after an activity: wait for the result screen and completion notification, then make a manual save. If a completed entry has not registered, reload the save and repeat that event without using Mission Replay.

Rewards, achievements and trophies

The 42 required Hobbies and Pastimes contribute 10% of GTA 5's overall completion. Completing them is necessary for the Career Criminal achievement or trophy and the game's 100% rewards, but finishing all optional hobbies does not increase the percentage beyond their listed requirements.

Achievements and trophies connected with Hobbies and Pastimes
Achievement or trophyRequirement
Multi-DisciplinedEarn one Gold medal in each of six activity types: a Shooting Range challenge, Flight School lesson, Street Race, Off-Road Race, Sea Race and Triathlon.
TP Industries Arms RaceBuy McKenzie Field Hangar as Trevor and complete all five ground and five air Arms Trafficking missions.
Wanted: Alive or AliveDeliver one Bail Bonds target to Maude alive.
Career CriminalReach 100% overall game completion, including all 42 required Hobbies and Pastimes.

Multi-Disciplined does not require Gold in all 42 entries. One Gold result from each of its six eligible activity types is enough. Conversely, Bronze medals are sufficient for the separate 100% checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Can you complete any 42 Hobbies and Pastimes?

No. The required 42 are fixed. Optional activities cannot replace a missing race, lesson, medal, sport or Parachuting group.

Do you need Gold medals for 100%?

No. Bronze or better is enough in Shooting Range and Flight School challenges, while third place or better is enough in races and Triathlons. Gold medals are relevant to the Multi-Disciplined achievement or trophy.

Do Yoga, Hunting or Bail Bonds count toward 100%?

No. They are listed as Hobbies and Pastimes but do not contribute to the required 42. Bail Bonds does have its own Wanted: Alive or Alive achievement or trophy.

Why do 13 Parachute Jumps count as only two activities?

The game groups the five Base Jumps as one checklist entry and the eight Helicopter Jumps as another. Both groups must be completed.

Can Franklin play Tennis?

No. In Story Mode, Tennis is playable by Michael and Trevor. Franklin can complete Golf, Darts and the Strip Club requirement instead.

Are Stock Car Races or Wildlife Photography required?

No. Both are optional post-2014 Story Mode activities. Neither affects the 42/42 requirement.

Does GTA Online progress count?

No. GTA Online uses separate characters, events and progression. Complete every requirement in a Story Mode save.
