GTA Vice City takes us to the year 1986 in the city of
Vice City, inspired by Miami, drawing inspiration from legendary series like Miami Vice but, above all, the movie
Scarface. There are several tributes to Brian de Palma's film throughout the game and the story has certain parallels.
We play as Tommy Vercetti (voiced by actor Ray Liotta) in a story of revenge.
A more elaborate story than GTA 3
Vice City features
a more elaborate story than GTA III. In the previous game, our protagonist was practically mute and took orders from mobsters, with a story that developed through cutscenes but wasn't too important. Vice City, on the other hand, has a much more developed narrative;
Vercetti speaks and has a very distinct personality that will be noticed in missions and cutscenes. The game uses an improved version of the GTA III engine, with slightly better graphics and the new addition of motorcycles.
Soundtrack and little game secrets
The game's soundtrack is packed with legendary 80s songs scattered across its various radio stations, which as usual cover different styles. Vice City features several Latin stations and classics like Thriller, alongside tracks from bands or solo artists such as Lionel Richie, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Blondie, or Foreigner.
Reception and legacy
Aside from the controversy over its gratuitously violent content and sexual undertones, the game was a critical and commercial success. It became the best-selling PS2 title, surpassing its predecessor GTA III, and held that honor until it was overtaken in 2006 by its sequel, San Andreas. It was ported to the Xbox console in May 2003 and released for PC in October of that same year.
