"A company called SplitFish claims that it has solved the problem regarding the PlayStation 3’s lack of rumble functionality. The company claims that its "dynamic force feedback system" can be used with the PlayStation 3’s SIXAXIS controller without interrupting its motion sensing abilities. Its low power force feedback technology is called SensorFX and uses no moving parts to produce the feedback. Its feedback will work across the entirety of the controller, allowing feedback to be focused on one side or the other if necessary. SplitFish says that its SensorFX technology can be sold as either an add-on for existing controllers or be imbedded into new designs. The add-on for the SIXAXIS plugs into the USB plug on the controller and uses the controller’s battery for power. The SensorFX has two different feedback modes. One mode is for use with games that feature built-in force feedback support, while the other uses the motion tilt functionality and button use to determine feedback actions. SplitFish claims that it will work with developers publishers in an effort to make the best use of its technology. Earlier, we reported on Sony's confirmation that there wouldn't be any force feedback available for the PS3. Well, we currently can't confirm this next bit of news, but if it's true, it's definitely going to be an interesting couple of weeks as Sony and Immersion scramble to see how this impacts their businesses and reputations. PS3blog.net seems to be stating this at the moment, with an assertion that the writer of the blog managed to acquire force feedback response using his Driving Force Pro: I just got Need for Speed: Carbon for the PS3. I put in the disc, booted up the game, selected "Quick Race", and started playing with my Driving Force Pro. What did I notice? Force Feedback! Both the jarring rumble when you crash and the more subtle pulls on the wheel when you start to lose traction with the road. This is with a plain US PS3 and a plain US copy of NFS: Carbon. No special tricks or settings are required for this at all. And this isn’t me quoting someone else, or reading into something. I felt this with my own two hands. Currently, we're trying to see if anyone's picked this tidbit up yet. Hopefully, there'll be an official statement or something soon enough. Till then, we'll just have to hinge our hopes on the SensorFX technology of SplitFish. Ever since the early 2000s, this rumor has already been going around. Everyone and their orphan's moogle-doll was talking about a possible remake of Final Fantasy VII. When the PS2 was released, who wouldn't want their favorite FF title enhanced with the back-then-next-gen? Another window opens and the PS3 is out. FFVII running on the Cell Processor, you ask? Well, there are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, that are dreamt of in your philosophy. Especially with the 10th year anniversary of FFVII looming just ahead (January 31 - that's tomorrow!), online forums have been ablaze again with this age-old rumor. Is Square really going to release a next-gen FFVII? Will they announce something during the anniversary? Some of us have probably grown sick of this rumor (same thing goes with the bit about being able to resurrect Aeris), and a lot have speculated that the supposed "game in the works" would be using the Unreal Engine 3. Regardless, the fact remains that most of us have been clamoring for a remake. Personally though, I'd take this with a grain of salt. Appealing though the idea is to me (let's see them make a game with Advent Children graphics!), I'll believe it when I see it. The rumor does get tiring after a while, but if Square Enix is going to make an announcement soon, all we can do for now is wait...
