Minecraft: How to Find Axolotls and Tame Them Easily

Where can you find axolotls in Minecraft?

Axolotls can spawn in any Minecraft world, although they are fairly rare and will only appear under certain circumstances when the following requirements are met:

• Axolotls spawn only underwater in groups of one to four.
• You will only find them below Y-level 63, meaning below sea level.
• For them to spawn underwater, the area must be completely dark and receive no sunlight.
• Axolotls must have a solid block above them within a distance of at least five blocks in their spawning habitat. This block can be stone, deepslate, andesite, diorite, granite, or tuff.
• Therefore, the most common biomes and locations where you can find axolotls are lush caves, underground lakes, and water-filled mines with bubble columns.

Bear in mind that, due to their spawning conditions, you will not find axolotls in rivers or open oceans. These creatures are drawn to the deep, dark waters of caves and mines. You can also spawn axolotls yourself using certain tools, but we will explain that further down.

You can take axolotls back to your shelter and build a small pond where you can release them and let them live peacefully.

But what if you want to tame and breed more axolotls without having to go looking for them? That is also possible, and you can do it by following these steps:

• To tame axolotls and breed babies, you need two adult axolotls in the water, preferably inside an enclosed pond so they cannot escape.
• You will also need a bucket of tropical fish. You can get one by using a water bucket to catch tropical fish in the sea.
• Once you have it, feed tropical fish to both adult axolotls. Hearts should appear above their heads.
• The axolotls will then produce a baby. They cannot breed again for another five minutes.

• The baby axolotl inherits the color of one of its parents, although there is a very small chance that it will be the rare blue variant.
• Baby axolotls will always follow their parents during this stage.
• After 20 minutes, the baby axolotl will grow into an adult. You can speed up this process by using more buckets of tropical fish, with each one reducing the remaining growth time by 10%.

Axolotl traits and benefits

As mentioned above, all axolotls are passive toward the player, but they have several traits that make them useful as pets, along with some special behaviors. These are the most important ones to keep in mind:

• All axolotls are hostile toward certain aquatic creatures, including fish, squid, drowned, guardians, and elder guardians. They will not attack turtles, dolphins, or frogs.
• Each attack deals 2 points of damage.
• If you help an axolotl defeat an aquatic creature while it is fighting, you will receive the Regeneration effect for several seconds. Any Mining Fatigue effect will also be removed.
• If an axolotl takes too much damage in combat, it may play dead so that other creatures ignore it, allowing the axolotl to recover health.
• Axolotls are amphibians, so they can leave the water and move around on land, but only temporarily. If they do not return to the water within five minutes, they will die, unless it is raining or there is a thunderstorm.
• While on land, they will search for the nearest body of water within 16 blocks that is at least two blocks deep and try to return to it.
