Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls delivers a fighting game experience starring characters from the Marvel universe. Heroes, antiheroes, and even outright villains come together to trade blows. However, that does not mean they all fight under the same conditions: the game features several different online and offline modes in which to battle. Here, we explain how each one works.
This is the game's story mode. You will work your way through a series of chapters with each of the five teams of playable characters, with each team having its own corresponding ending.
This section contains the traditional versus modes and offers a wide variety of ways to fight:
Arcadia Rumble is a mode that combines elements of a beat 'em up with the game's traditional fighting matches. Before starting, you will need to customise your avatar, select your team of fighters, and choose your Fighter Souls. Each character has one, and they can be levelled up by completing missions in Lessons to provide different advantages.
The mode consists of several rounds, with each round divided into two phases. During the first phase, you must explore the stage and collect items that award points, pick up power-ups that allow you to move faster or perform special attacks, and, most importantly, hit your opponents to steal their points. The available areas change during each round.
Once the first phase is over, you will enter a battle in which you must defeat your opponent as many times as possible. Each victory awards one point, although your opponent will also earn a point whenever they defeat you.
These phases are repeated for another two rounds, and the player with the most points at the end wins. During each round, the Rumble stage becomes smaller, forcing you to confront the other contestants' avatars more frequently.
Arena is an offline mode in which you must first select one of the five Circuits available by default. Each Circuit corresponds to one of the game's teams of heroes and villains. The modifiers applied depend on your chosen difficulty: the higher the difficulty, the greater the handicap, with your team having less health and dealing less damage while opponents have more health and deal more damage.
Each Circuit features five battles along one of its available routes, and you will need to play through each Circuit four times to complete every route. This mode also features a secret Circuit that you will need to complete if you want to earn the game's Platinum trophy.
This is the traditional Survival Mode: defeat as many opponents as possible before they defeat you. You will recover health between battles, and defeating 100 opponents will unlock Color 07 for every character. One unusual feature is that you can leave the mode and return without losing your winning streak, resuming from your most recent victory. Naturally, if you lose, you will have to start again from the beginning.
This should not be confused with the tutorial available in Versus Mode. Here, you will find the following options:
