On its own, Grand Theft Auto 6 is already one of the most anticipated games in years, and many of us know that its release could be accompanied by another equally massive event: a new multiplayer experience that completely overhauls GTA Online as we know it today. But... what exactly is Rockstar planning? Will GTA 6 launch alongside a new GTA Online? Below, we'll take a closer look at the subject and round up all the official information and known leaks surrounding it.
First, let's start with the most important point: at the time of writing, Rockstar Games has not officially announced a new GTA Online experience to accompany the worldwide launch of GTA 6, nor has the company said that one will be released sometime after the game arrives.
For now, then, the possibility of a new GTA Online remains a complete mystery. In fact, in the press release Rockstar issued to announce the different editions of GTA 6, the company emphasized that the game would be "the biggest, most immersive single-player experience" in the franchise to date, without mentioning any potential online multiplayer modes. This single-player focus is reinforced even further on the GTA 6 page on the PlayStation Store, where the game is tagged as supporting "1 player" and "offline play", once again with no mention of multiplayer features.
Any lingering doubts are largely cleared up by the GTA 6 FAQ on this same PlayStation Store page. When asked directly whether the game features any multiplayer modes or functionality, the company gives a very clear answer: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." Even so, this only refers to GTA 6 at launch and not to what might happen further down the line...
We don't think all this information should necessarily be taken at face value. GTA 5 also began life as a single-player experience, and yet Rockstar launched GTA Online one month after the game was released. The fact that the company hasn't said anything about an online mode for GTA 6 doesn't mean per se that there won't be one.
Beyond the confirmed information above, we can venture into purely speculative territory. Analysts believe GTA 6 will eventually receive its own GTA Online experience in one form or another, sooner or later. After all, Rockstar acquired the Cfx.re team in August 2023. They are best known for creating the FiveM and RedM mods, two of the most popular toolsets for role-playing on online servers in GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, respectively.
In early 2026, it was also confirmed that Cfx.re was opening a digital store where the modding and server-creator communities could begin buying and selling assets, scripts and other content for GTA Online and Red Dead Online, further strengthening the multiplayer side of Rockstar's two biggest online experiences.
These developments have led many players to suspect that Rockstar could eventually introduce official roleplay systems in GTA 6's potential online mode, or at the very least allow them to influence its multiplayer approach. The company also partnered with NoPixel in September 2025, one of GTA 5's best-known roleplay server communities. In any case, it's worth stressing that there is no official information confirming whether GTA 6 will have its own dedicated online mode, although it would certainly be surprising if it didn't.
Some people simply believe the current version of GTA Online could receive a major overhaul several months after GTA 6 launches, bringing it more in line with the new entry. Others think an entirely new "GTA Online 2" will start from scratch shortly afterward and coexist with the original while offering its own exclusive next-gen features. For now, though, all of this is built on speculation and should be treated as nothing more than rumor.
Whatever happens, GTA Online has brought billions of dollars into the coffers of Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two, over more than a decade. Take-Two has also repeatedly emphasized its interest in recurring experiences that players want to return to and that can generate long-term revenue. With all that in mind, the available information strongly suggests that the company is planning a new multiplayer experience built around GTA 6's mechanics. We'll have to wait and see. As they say, only time will tell.
