With the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 getting closer, players are asking more and more questions, and one of the biggest ones is how much storage space Rockstar’s open-world game will need on our consoles in order to install and play it. How big will the game be, and what will its total file size be? For now, the company has not confirmed an official and exact figure, but below we will try to gather the available information and give a realistic estimate that lines up with what we can expect.
As we mentioned, at the time of writing we still do not have an exact figure for how many gigabytes GTA 6 will take up on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. However, over the years there have already been some supposed leaks that may give us an idea.
The unofficial GTA 6 Intel profile on X published a post in 2024 claiming that the game’s size would be "just under 200 GB". That is an incredibly high number, but honestly, it is not completely crazy if we look at other examples.
Just look at Rockstar’s latest major games, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. On consoles, both have file sizes of around 100-120 GB, although that size has grown over time with updates. In any case, it is not something that other ambitious games have not matched or even surpassed, as we have seen with Starfield, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Forza Horizon 5 or the latest Call of Duty entries, to name a few.
On consoles, games like ARK: Survival Ascended can require an impressive amount of more than 300 GB of space. That said, this would sound pretty outrageous for GTA 6, and we do not think it will go that far. Still, the fact that the game has been announced for launch without physical disc copies could give us a clue here, since today’s Blu-ray XL discs, the highest-capacity ones, have a storage limit of 128 GB.
Although there may be many other reasons why Rockstar does not want to release GTA 6 on disc, if the game goes over 128 GB, that already gives the company a good excuse to avoid the hassle. In that case, each copy would have to ship with more than one disc, which would also make the whole process more expensive...
Right now, while we wait for official information on this topic, and based on leaks and speculation, we can assume that GTA 6 will probably take up around 130 to 200 GB at launch. Most estimates from media outlets and analysts place the game’s size around those numbers and, realistically, it feels like a figure that makes sense considering how open-world games have evolved in the current generation.
It is worth remembering that all players who pre-order GTA 6 will be able to access the game’s preload up to one week before its release on November 19, 2026. That should give everyone enough time to clear some space and download it without rushing, so they can enjoy it from day one.
