As you would expect from a game in the GTA series, the story of Grand Theft Auto VI will plunge us straight into the criminal underworld of the city where it takes place. However, reducing it simply to "committing crimes" would be far too simplistic. So, if you want to know what GTA VI is about without spoilers, here we will explain what GTA VI tells, and when and where the game's main events take place.
The story of GTA VI revolves around two main characters: Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval.
In Lucia's case, we have a tough woman who grew up on the streets of Liberty City. From a young age, and thanks to what her father taught her, she learned how to defend herself from threats. However, a series of unspecified circumstances, to avoid any kind of spoiler — referred to only as "protecting her family" — landed her in a prison in the state of Leonida. But a stroke of luck will allow her to earn parole, which could give her the chance to start over... although what she does with that opportunity will be up to her.
On the other hand, Jason is a man who can only be described as someone who has had bad luck and made poor choices. He went from being a young criminal to enlisting in the army. However, things did not turn out as he expected, and instead of getting his life back on track, he ended up becoming one of the trusted men of a seasoned drug trafficker. Now he lives his life following orders, taking part in all kinds of crimes, including smuggling and drug trafficking. He does not seem to have much of an alternative, since even his home belongs to his boss, a man who has not survived this long without a grip as iron-fisted as his weapons.
Fate brings Lucia and Jason together, and they fall in love. Now, like Bonnie and Clyde, they will look for a way to leave this life behind and enjoy some peace and rest. Although it seems that this calm may only come after a storm of bullets.
Grand Theft Auto VI takes place in the present day, sometime between 2020 and 2030. We know that Lucia went to prison "in the mid-2020s" and that she will be released before serving her full sentence, so that is the game's time frame. As for where it takes place, this is more interesting for fans: we return to Vice City, the city that gave its name to one of the previous installments in the series.
Around 30 years have passed since the events of GTA Vice City, but this fictional version of Miami still has plenty going on. Parties and crime, trouble, strange people doing even stranger things, alligators, traffickers, gangs... That said, it is worth noting that the action will take us beyond the city: Vice City is only one of the cities in the state of Leonida, inspired by California. As a result, we will find a map that takes us to the Leonida Keys — an archipelago — Mariana County, Ambrosia and more. Below you can see an approximate idea of the map published by gta6mapio based on what the community has been able to "see and build" from trailers and images, as a full official map has not yet been released.
Of course, and as we mentioned above, this map is inevitably subject to inaccuracies for now. There is speculation about the presence of the Bermuda Triangle, and Rockstar has surely kept several secrets in store to surprise players all over the world with unexpected locations and mysteries to solve.
