Find out how and where to get or tame every horse breed in Red Dead Redemption 2.
By now, you probably already know just how important horses are in Red Dead Redemption 2. They are your main means of transportation and even provide extra storage for your items. The best horses in the game can cost a small fortune at the stables. You can also steal them or take them from other riders, but one of the best ways to get a horse without spending a dime is by taming a wild one—and it is pretty rewarding, too.
To tame a horse you find roaming in the wild, first keep it targeted with L2/LT. Lasso it, approach as slowly as possible and take every opportunity to calm it down with Square/X.
Once you are close enough, mount it with Triangle/Y to begin a bucking sequence. The aim is to stay on the horse by moving the left stick in the opposite direction to the way it is trying to throw you. Once it stops bucking, ride it for a while and pat it by pressing the left stick. Before long, it will be broken in and become your temporary horse. To make it your main horse, you will need to transfer your saddle to it.
All Wild Horse Breeds and Where to Find Them
The breeds you can tame are listed below in alphabetical order. The map shows the areas where each one can be found, with a different color for each breed. The White Arabian is the best wild horse you can tame:
- White Arabian: white dot on the map.
This is the best wild horse you can tame. It can be found in the mountains of Ambarino from Chapter 2 onward. It has the best health, stamina, speed and acceleration of any wild horse, as well as excellent Elite handling. - Appaloosa: red dots on the map.
These are work horses, so they have better stamina and health but lower speed and acceleration. They can be found in several far-flung locations, including Cholla Springs, between Tumbleweed and Armadillo in New Austin; Big Valley, northwest of Strawberry in West Elizabeth; west of Valentine, near Cattail Pond; and the Wapiti Indian Reservation in northern Ambarino. - Tennessee Walker: blue dots on the map.
These are among the most common riding horses and do not have any particularly outstanding stats. They can be found in many areas, including north and southeast of Armadillo in New Austin; northwest of Blackwater in West Elizabeth; and around the center of The Heartlands in New Hanover. - Hungarian Halfbred: orange dots on the map.
As war horses, they have better stamina and health than average, but lower speed and acceleration. This makes them ideal for intense gunfights, as they are tough as nails. They can be found west of Armadillo in New Austin. - Morgan: pink dots on the map.
These common riding horses can be found in plenty of places, although none of their stats really stand out. Look for them across the southern half of New Austin; south and northeast of Blackwater; west of Wallace Station in West Elizabeth; and in Cumberland Forest, northeast of Valentine. - Mustang (Tiger Striped Bay): gray dots on the map.
This horse has excellent stamina and health, average speed and only one real weakness: its acceleration. That makes it one of the most well-rounded wild horses in the game. It can be found in one very specific part of New Austin, southeast of Fort Mercer in Rio Bravo. - Nokota: dark green dots on the map.
This is a racehorse, so its main strengths are acceleration and, especially, speed—the highest of any wild horse. It can be found in several areas across the southern half of New Austin; northeast of Blackwater in West Elizabeth; and in Cumberland Forest, northeast of Valentine. - American Paint: brown dots on the map.
A well-balanced work horse that excels in health and stamina while still offering decent speed and acceleration. It can be found near Lake Don Julio in New Austin; southwest of Tumbleweed in New Austin; and north of Fort Wallace, near Donner Falls in Ambarino. - Thoroughbred: light green/pistachio dots on the map.
This is a racehorse with excellent speed and acceleration, as well as good handling. It can be found west and southeast of Armadillo in New Austin, and around Emerald Ranch in New Hanover. - Mustang: black dots on the map.
These well-balanced war and work horses have good stamina and health. They can be found in several parts of New Austin, including north of Armadillo, as well as east of Emerald Ranch in New Hanover. - Kentucky Saddler: purple dots on the map.
A riding horse without any standout attributes. It is one of the most common and easiest wild horses to find, appearing everywhere from south of Rhodes in Lemoyne to northwest of Valentine, northern Ambarino and several areas of New Austin. - American Standardbred: yellow dots on the map.
A racehorse with good speed and acceleration. It can be tamed south and southwest of Armadillo in New Austin; east of Wallace Station in West Elizabeth; and south of Fort Wallace, in the northern part of Cumberland Forest in New Hanover.
