Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition has 55 Steam achievements: 40 from GTA IV's single-player content, five from The Lost and Damned and ten from The Ballad of Gay Tony. The current PC release has no multiplayer achievements.
Below you will find every achievement and its exact requirement, plus the time-sensitive tasks, cheat warnings and Complete Edition differences to understand before starting.
Spoiler warning: Achievement names and requirements reveal mission titles and some late-story progress.
| Content | Achievements | Online achievements | Required for all 55? |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA IV | 40 | 0 | Yes |
| The Lost and Damned | 5 | 0 | Yes |
| The Ballad of Gay Tony | 10 | 0 | Yes |
| Complete Edition | 55 | 0 | Yes |
Steam groups the three campaigns into one achievement list. Each campaign keeps its own saves and completion progress, but all 55 achievements contribute to the same Steam game completion.
The original Games for Windows – Live version shared GTA IV's ten ranked multiplayer achievements with Xbox 360. When the PC release became Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition in 2020, Games for Windows – Live, official multiplayer and leaderboards were removed. The current Steam list therefore contains the 40 base-game single-player achievements and all 15 achievements from the two episodes.
The ten legacy online achievements that are not part of Steam's current 55 are:
These ten are not required for 100% of the current Steam achievement list. Guides that include them are referring to the old GFWL or Xbox achievement set, not the current Steam achievement list. Steam's store page confirms both the 55-achievement total and the removal of GFWL, multiplayer and leaderboards.
With these two base-game precautions—the 30-hour timer and Roman's ability—all 55 achievements can be completed without restarting an entire campaign.
GTA IV contributes 40 single-player achievements. They cover the story, friendships, activities, police work, collectibles and 100% completion. The ten multiplayer achievements from the original PC release are not included.
| Achievement | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Off The Boat | Complete the first story mission, The Cousins Bellic. |
| One Hundred And Eighty | Score 180 in one turn of darts by hitting treble 20 with all three darts. |
| Pool Shark | Beat one of Niko's friends in a full game of pool. |
| King of QUB3D | Beat the QUB3D high score by exceeding 10,950 points. Finish or leave the arcade game for the result to register. |
| Finish Him | Perform ten successful melee counters within four minutes. Dodge an incoming attack and strike back immediately; the opponents do not have to be different people. |
| Genetically Superior | Win 20 of Brucie's single-player street races. There are nine distinct routes, and repeat wins count towards the total of 20; the race in the story mission No. 1 does not count. |
| Wheelie Rider | Maintain one motorcycle wheelie for at least 500 feet, approximately 152 metres. |
| Gobble Gobble | Score three consecutive strikes—a turkey—in the same game of ten-pin bowling. |
| Driving Mr. Bellic | Unlock Roman's Car Service by raising his Like stat to 60%, then wait for his call. Do this before starting One Last Thing because one ending can remove the opportunity on that save. |
| Rolled Over | Complete five full car rolls during one continuous crash. |
| Walk Free | Reach a four-star wanted level and escape the police normally without using the wanted-level reduction code 267-555-0100. |
| Courier Service | Complete all ten Drug Delivery jobs by calling Little Jacob and selecting Job after completing Shadow. |
| Retail Therapy | Unlock Little Jacob's discounted weapon service by raising his Like stat to 75%, then wait for his call. |
| Chain Reaction | Make ten vehicles explode within ten seconds. Pack vehicles closely together before using an RPG or other explosives. |
| One Man Army | Remain alive at a six-star wanted level for five continuous minutes without being killed or arrested and without using the wanted-level cheat. |
| Lowest Point | Complete the story mission Roman's Sorrow. |
| Order Fulfilled | Complete all ten Exotic Export orders sent by Brucie to Niko's e-mail inbox. Reply positively, steal the requested vehicle and deliver it to the East Hook garage. |
| Manhunt | Eliminate all 30 named Most Wanted targets through a police computer: ten in Broker, Dukes and Bohan, ten in Algonquin and ten in Alderney. |
| Cleaned The Mean Streets | Catch or kill 20 criminals through the police computer's View Current Crimes option. These are separate from the 30 named Most Wanted targets. |
| Fed The Fish | Complete the story mission Uncle Vlad. |
| It'll Cost Ya | Travel as a taxi passenger from one island to another without skipping the journey. Asking the driver to hurry is allowed. |
| Sightseer | Complete all five distinct Higgins Helitours routes. Return later if every helicopter or route is not currently available. |
| Warm Coffee | Finish a successful date and be invited inside the girlfriend's home. Kate does not invite Niko inside; Michelle is an easy early option. |
| That's How We Roll! | Unlock Brucie's helicopter service by raising his Like stat to 75%, then wait for his call. |
| Half Million | Hold at least $500,000 at one time. This is the current cash balance, not cumulative lifetime earnings. |
| Impossible Trinity | Complete the story mission Museum Piece. |
| Full Exploration | Unlock every island through story progress. Alderney opens after completing Three Leaf Clover. |
| You Got The Message | Find and deliver all 30 vehicles requested by Stevie. The text-message jobs become available after No. 1 and Smackdown; vehicle condition changes the payment, not completion credit. |
| Dare Devil | Successfully complete all 50 Unique Stunt Jumps. Two require a boat, and the game does not provide a permanent completed-jump checklist. |
| Assassin's Greed | Complete all nine assassination contracts for The Fixer, unlocked after Truck Hustle. |
| Endangered Species | Kill all 200 Flying Rats—the pigeons serving as GTA IV's hidden packages. The seagulls in TLAD and TBoGT are unrelated. |
| Under The Radar | Fly a helicopter beneath all 14 qualifying bridges. After the first successful bridge, the remaining locations temporarily appear as map icons. |
| Dial B For Bomb | Unlock Packie's car-bomb service by raising his Like stat to 75%, then wait for his call. |
| Gracefully Taken | Complete the story mission I'll Take Her. |
| Liberty City (5) | Raise every active surviving friend's Like stat above 90% at the same time. Little Jacob, Brucie and Packie always count; Roman counts only while alive, and Dwayne counts only if his friendship was activated after killing Playboy X. Girlfriends do not count. |
| No More Strangers | Meet every Random Character available in the playthrough at least once. GTA IV contains 14 in total. Ivan, Cherise and Clarence are available only if they were spared during their corresponding story missions; Jeff also counts. Only the first encounter with each available character is required for this achievement. Key To The City separately requires all 16 encounters belonging to the ten characters that count towards 100% completion. |
| That Special Someone | Complete the story mission That Special Someone. |
| You Won! | Complete the final story mission through either ending. |
| Liberty City Minute | Complete GTA IV's main story in less than 30 hours of recorded play time. Use taxis and skip journeys, minimise free-roam detours and monitor the timer under Statistics. |
| Key To The City | Reach 100% in GTA IV's base-game Game Progress statistic. TLAD, TBoGT and the combined total of 55 Steam achievements are not part of this requirement. |
Key To The City measures GTA IV's base-game progress only. Its 100% checklist is:
Neither The Lost and Damned nor The Ballad of Gay Tony contributes to Key To The City.
The Lost and Damned adds five Steam achievements. Three follow Johnny Klebitz's story and two cover bike races, Gang Wars and the toughness of Terry and Clay.
| Achievement | Requirement |
|---|---|
| TLAD: One Percenter | Complete Clean and Serene and help Billy recover his bike. |
| TLAD: The Lost Boy | Complete This Shit's Cursed and become leader of The Lost. |
| TLAD: Easy Rider | Complete the final story mission, Get Lost. |
| TLAD: Get Good Wood | Knock 69 opponents off their motorcycles with a bat during bike races, which become available after Liberty City Choppers. The total is cumulative; the dismounts need not be consecutive, you do not have to win, and the same opponent can count again after getting back on a bike. |
| TLAD: Full Chat | Raise both Terry's and Clay's toughness to 100%. Backup unlocks after Hit the Pipe, with End of Chapter being the first subsequent story mission in which it can be used. Toughness increases when each member survives an eligible backup mission or Gang War; a member who is downed receives no increase for that activity. Neither can be lost permanently, so repeat Gang Wars after the story if necessary. |
The Ballad of Gay Tony adds ten Steam achievements. Its two longest requirements involve the performance scores recorded across 26 story missions.
| Achievement | Requirement |
|---|---|
| TBoGT: Gone Down | Complete all 15 Base Jumps, which become available after High Dive: five Target Jumps, five Vehicle Jumps and five Helicopter Jumps. Perfect ratings are not required. |
| TBoGT: Diamonds Forever | Complete Not So Fast and finish the Trinity storyline. |
| TBoGT: Four Play | Hit any golf flag four times at Swingers. The hits are cumulative and do not have to be consecutive. |
| TBoGT: Bear Fight | Win all six rounds of the L.C. Cage Fighters championship, defeating 18 opponents in one championship run. Losing resets the championship. |
| TBoGT: Catch the Bus | Complete the special Bus Stop dance sequence successfully at both Maisonette 9 and Hercules. |
| TBoGT: Snow Queen | Complete 25 Drug Wars, available after Corner Kids. Further Drug Wars remain available if more attempts are needed. |
| TBoGT: Adrenaline Junkie | Freefall for the maximum possible time and survive. Jump from a helicopter at maximum altitude, delay deploying the parachute until close to the ground and land safely. |
| TBoGT: Maestro | Complete the final story mission, Departure Time. |
| TBoGT: Past the Velvet Rope | Record a score of at least 80% in each of the 26 scored story missions; this is required per mission, not as an overall average. |
| TBoGT: Gold Star | Complete every performance objective and record 100% across all 26 scored story missions. Objectives completed in separate clean replays remain checked, and completing Gold Star also satisfies Past the Velvet Rope. |
You do not have to satisfy every objective in one run. Complete accuracy, headshot, damage or vehicle objectives in one replay and tackle the time limit in another. For reliable tracking, start the mission replay from the beginning and avoid cheats, taxis, deaths, arrests and continuing from a failed checkpoint.
Several phone cheats explicitly invalidate a scored attempt, including weapon-set, health-and-armour, wanted-level reduction, explosive-punch, Annihilator, Buzzard and APC cheats.
Only certain GTA IV phone cheats temporarily block particular achievements during the current session. They do not permanently disable achievements for an entire save. Create a separate manual save before entering a code, fully quit the game and load a clean pre-cheat save before attempting an affected achievement.
The four base-game achievements that can be affected are Cleaned The Mean Streets, Finish Him, One Man Army and Walk Free. Published sources disagree about whether the TBoGT Buzzard code also affects the latter two, so treat it as potentially unsafe.
Cheats can also invalidate TBoGT mission-score attempts even when they do not directly block a Steam achievement. Do not use cheats during attempts for TBoGT: Past the Velvet Rope or TBoGT: Gold Star.
See the complete GTA 4 PC cheat list for every phone number and its achievement warning.
If repeated Space or controller-button inputs do not let Niko climb into the helicopter during Out of Commission or A Revenger's Tragedy, temporarily cap GTA IV at 30 FPS and retry the sequence. This is a long-standing high-framerate timing problem, not a failure of You Won! or Liberty City Minute.
Reaching 60% Like is only the threshold. Remain on good terms with Roman and wait for his telephone call confirming that Car Service is available. Unlock it before committing to the final story route.
As community-tested workarounds, complete the Hercules dance sequence first and then return to Maisonette 9 if the club initially triggers a different cutscene. A kiss or bathroom cutscene does not mean that the Bus Stop sequence was completed successfully. If the rhythm inputs appear to be affected by a high-framerate setup, try temporarily capping the game at 30 FPS before retrying.
Very high framerates can make vehicle-rotation physics or the achievement counter inconsistent. If a clearly successful five-roll crash does not register, use a 60 Hz display limit and cap the game at 60 FPS; retry at 30 FPS if necessary.
Restart the mission from the beginning rather than continuing from a failed checkpoint. Avoid cheats, taxis, deaths and arrests during scored replays, then allow the results screen to finish recording the attempt before leaving.
If the four cable shots do not register as the Sharpshooter objective on a high-framerate system, temporarily cap the game at 30 FPS and replay the mission from the beginning.
Yes. The current list contains 55 single-player achievements and none requires the removed official multiplayer mode. Account activation, save problems, cheats or technical issues can still prevent an individual unlock, so keep rotating manual saves.
No. The current Complete Edition has no multiplayer achievements. The ten online achievements found in old GFWL and Xbox lists are not part of Steam's 55.
Yes. You need all five TLAD achievements and all ten TBoGT achievements for a perfect 55-of-55 Steam completion. They are not required for Key To The City, which only measures GTA IV's base-game progress.
Liberty City Minute requires another save if the story timer exceeds 30 hours. Driving Mr. Bellic can become unavailable on a save after one late-story outcome if Roman's Car Service was not unlocked before One Last Thing. Most other base-game achievements can be completed after the story.
Yes. Most activities, collectibles, friendships and side missions remain available after the ending. The main exceptions to plan beforehand are the 30-hour limit and Roman's Car Service.
No. GTA IV and its episodes do not require completion on a particular difficulty setting.
No. Steam records the 55 achievements without Xbox Gamerscore, PlayStation trophy grades or a separate Platinum achievement. Completing all 55 gives GTA IV perfect-game status on Steam.
