GDC 09: Sony's Pub Fund
Make an exclusive PlayStation Network game and make mad bank.
March 26, 2009 - Calling all independent publishers -- Sony wants your ideas for the next great PlayStation Network game. Today during a Game Developers Conference panel on self-publishing on the PSN, Chris Eden from SCEA announced the Sony Pub Fund. Basically, if you create an exclusive title for the network, Sony will match your development budget with guaranteed royalties. Sony will help you with game design and marketing plans, but you'll own the IP, be the publisher, set the price, and control your baby. In short, this isn't first- or second-party development. Eden wouldn't comment on what the Pub Fund cap is in terms of budgets, but he did say he'd discuss it with interested partied willing to sign a nondisclosure agreement.
Think the global initiative sounds too good to be true? Well, the first game to spring from this model is none other than Burn, Zombie, Burn!, which was just released on the PSN today.
