Mortal Kombat 1 not only features an exciting story mode, but also the familiar Towers and Invasions mode. This mode, which receives new content with each season, has you explore a series of paths across different maps. However, as well as completing fights, you'll also need to find ways to unlock secret paths. During this season, that means obtaining the Nether Stone or solving special Klues. Here, we'll explain how to get the Nether Stone, how to find the gates it opens, and what awaits you beyond them.

How to get the Nether Stone

The first real obstacle you'll encounter without knowing how to overcome it will be the gates that require a Nether Stone. These nodes are blocked by a flaming barrier, and the game will clearly tell you that you need the aforementioned Stone.

To get the Nether Stone, all you need to do is progress through Invasions mode until you reach the end of the Season. During one of the final fights on the last Mesa available, you'll have to defeat Scorpion, this season's Invasion Boss. Once you beat him, you'll receive the Nether Stone.

It's worth noting that you only need one Nether Stone to open every gate across all the Mesas. Future seasons will likely feature an adapted version of the same mechanic. For example, they could include "Soul Stone Gates," make Shang Tsung the season's boss, and simply require you to progress far enough to defeat him and obtain the item.

How to find Nether Stone gates

Naturally, it's almost impossible to remember where every gate was located. Fortunately, the game features a special "compass". Simply look at the color of the path connecting the nodes.

  • If the path is green, following it will lead you to a blocked route that can be opened. This may simply mean that you haven't fully completed the Mesa yet, or it could lead to a Klue fight or a Nether Stone gate.
  • If the path is light blue, following it won't lead you to anything new.

What's behind the Nether Stone gates?

You'll mainly encounter high-level fights against special enemies. As a general rule, defeating these opponents rewards you with special cosmetic items for the character you defeated.
